AAPS Welcomes New Executive Director

The Board of Directors of the Association of Administrative and Professional Staff of the University of British Columbia (AAPS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Executive Director, Joey Hansen. Joey began his position June 9, 2015.

Joey’s expertise in negotiations in the post-secondary landscape will support the Board’s strategic vision. His breadth of experience in labour relations ensures that AAPS will continue to help members create a quality work environment here at UBC.

Joey is very much looking forward to working with the AAPS team and meeting the members. “I believe that AAPS has made some significant gains over the last few years in representing the members to the University and improving engagement as the membership has grown,” said Joey. “I am ready to take up the challenges before us, including the Market Survey and the Health Benefits Review. As well, I am committed to ensuring The University treats AAPS members respectfully, particularly in the face of organizational change.”

Joey returns to his hometown of Vancouver after serving as the Director of Higher Education at the Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA). There, he oversaw the Higher Education Division, which represents 20,000 university and college employees including professional staff, managers, faculty, and administrators.

Joey and his MTA group ran a successful campaign to allow employees enrolled in an RRSP-type system to return to a more secure defined benefit pension plan. He also successfully negotiated an employer-subsidized health insurance plan for sessional faculty as they had been forced to buy private medical insurance at a cost that left many members uninsured.

During his time with MTA, Joey built positive and productive relationships with the public colleges and universities in Massachusetts.

For each of the organizations he has served, Joey has developed a platform to engage members on issues and encourage member participation and discourse.

Joey studied at the Florida Coastal School of Law and holds a Bachelor of Arts, Sociology and Anthropology from Simon Fraser University.

The Board is eager to begin working with Joey. His wealth of knowledge and passion will help us to continue to serve the needs and interests of all AAPS members.

Joey can be reached at 604.822.8230 and joey.hansen@ubc.ca.
