AAPS Celebrates the 2016 UBC Community United Way Campaign

Join AAPS for our annual UBC Community United Way Campaign celebration event. This year we will be focusing on practices to help build cohesive communities in our diverse workplace.

Program Summary

This session will explore how we communicate concepts of power and how it plays out in our workplace and society. Participants will create a shared understanding of the words that get tossed around when speaking about diversity. Through group discussions and experiential learning, participants will examine individual and systemic barriers, expectations, and norms. Participants will apply other lenses to broaden their perspectives about accessibility, inclusion, power, and privilege.

What will you learn:

  • Unpacking and challenging 'reverse' racism
  • Power structures and how this affects our ability to engage
  • The interplay between intersectionality, equity, equality, and justice
  • Steps to meaningful community engagement

How you will learn:

  • Group Discussions
  • Short Activities
  • Self-reflection

Audience

This session is designed for AAPS members who would like to gain a better understanding of structures and practices that will help improve inclusiveness in our diverse workplace. We have specifically designed this session to have a small number of participants. Not sure if this session is right for you? Please contact sarah.muff@ubc.ca

About Your Facilitator

Romi is learning various ways to share power (co-executive director at PeerNetBC), loves spicy food (the chef at home), and enjoys the challenge of being in unfamiliar places (where am I?). Having facilitated thousands of training sessions on community engagement and anti-oppression, he uses experiential education to put theory to practice. A husband, soon-to-be-parent, human rights advocate, community developer, and someone who hopes to grow all his vegetables at home one day, one plot at a time.
