About the Notions of Power Series

We come into the world from different places, and we come into our jobs from different life experiences and philosophies. Almost all of us encounter the challenges of change in the workplace, and those changes intersect with our orientations to change, adaptability, control, and personal power.

The goal of this series is to support members in understanding their personal power in the workplace and to help build personal productivity practices, resilience, and better work relationships. In our ever-changing workplaces and with increasing workloads, this series will offer skills for analyzing your l situation and practices to help improve your circumstances.

There are five modules in this series, but you can participate in as many as interest you. While sections build on one another to a certain extent, and it will be helpful to you to follow them in order, it is not required.

AAPS Member Services Officers are here to support and represent you in your workplace relationship with UBC. If you are experiencing issues with workload/hours of work, extreme stress, conflict in the workplace, or have questions about organizational change, please contact the AAPS Office.

Notions of Power is a series of five professional development sessions that focus on helping AAPS members better understand their personal power to in the workplace in order to build personal productivity, resilience, and better work relationships. About Each Session

Module 1: Breaking Patterns of Procrastination

Putting things off until the last minute? Having a hard time starting a project? Or is it hard to finish and actually put a close to something you are working on? This workshop is here to help you procrastinate less and get more done.  Contrary to what most people think, procrastination is not fundamentally a time management problem, which is why just trying to manage your schedule better is limited in effectiveness in changing this pattern of behaviour. Module 2: Overcoming Perfectionism: A New Way Forward

This session will introduce participants to some of the concepts that drive perfectionism so that they may have a better understanding of what is going on as well as provide strategies to manage the challenging parts that arise within us that keep it going. Learn more.

Module 3: Setting and Maintaining Good Boundaries

This session, will help you develop your boundary setting skills and help you maintain a healthy balance. The workshop begins with clearly defining what boundaries are and then will move into practical ideas and application of boundary strategies for a healthy life, with a focus on applied experiences in the workplace. Module 4: Connecting with Your Personal Power in an Ever-Changing Workplace

This session acknowledges the impact of frequent change in the workplace, and the potentially disruptive effect change can have. It also invites participants to consider the opportunities and challenges therein. True personal power is less about being adversarial or counter-pushing and more about our capacity for adaptability and psychological flexibility while also holding on to our voice. This way of thinking of personal power can help you to adapt to change more effectively and also hold on to the best parts of yourself as you navigate the ever-changing landscape of work. Module 5: Personal Power II: The Art of Creating Strong Relationships in the World of Work

Interpersonal stressors are one of the most commonly associated challenges that people report in their experiences of workplace stress. Relationships at work can help us to keep grounded, inspired, encouraged, or deflated, resentful, and not valued. While we cannot often choose exactly whom we work with, it can help to be as well-equipped as possible to find ways to relate well at work in spite of the challenges that may appear. This session focuses on particular concepts and skills to take your relationship skills up, up, up! Learn more.
