2017 Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services

 

On October 13th, AAPS presented to the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services as part of their public consultation for the upcoming provincial budget.

This year AAPS focused on the importance of ensuring adequate and longer-term funding for staffing initiatives outlined in the minister’s mandate letters.

We know that AAPS members will serve a critical role at UBC in implementing the Province’s promises for:

  • Expanding post-secondary co-operative education
  • Creating more opportunities for technology and innovation in post-secondary education
  • Expanding forestry focused academic and co-operative education programs
  • Prioritizing mental health
  • Ensures that the provincial government

We want to ensure the success of these initiatives as well as protect our members and structured funding for staff through the provincial budget can help achieve those goals.

AAPS also spoke about the impact of precarious work on our members and again encouraged the Provincial Government to ensure that their funding models for post-secondary education and research help to address the issues created by a precarious work environment including:

  • Psychological safety in the workplace
  • Ability to attract top-tier candidates
  • Inability to meet basic life objectives
