Program Summary

As a manager, you conduct performance reviews with your staff but do you also include a discussion about their career development?  Most managers know that this conversation dovetails naturally from the performance conversation, yet it often does not occur or is confined to discussing training, only one aspect of career development. Research has shown that career development is the single most important tool that managers have to drive innovation, retention, productivity and results. And the 2011 UBC Workplace Experience Survey identifies that staff are eager to have more career support.  

If you are not holding the conversation because of a lack of strategy, a perception that it’s time consuming, or that it will create expectations that are not achievable, then this workshop is for you. A career conversation drives mutual success that goes beyond traditional discussions of training or promotions. It links individual goals with departmental and organizational goals and is not about another “form”. It involves shared accountability with the staff member who does most of the heavy lifting and is an essential tool for the modern manager for achieving results in today’s innovative and changing environment.

This session will help you to be more prepared for the performance review and the related career conversation that addresses “where do we go from here?”  The primary focus of this workshop will be on career development component of the conversation and its shared accountability.
