Program Summary

The ability to assert yourself with respect and sensitivity is key to achieving outcomes that work for you. Effective assertion can be especially difficult to maintain in conflict situations rather than overreacting or selling yourself short. This session will introduce assertion concepts and skills in a variety of challenging situations and will give you an opportunity to practice improving and maintaining an assertive style under pressure.


The goal of this session is to integrate assertiveness with active listening skills when resolving conflict, negotiating and responding to criticism.  Whether you are negotiating an important issue, expressing your thoughts and feelings in a conflict or standing firm under pressure, the ability to assert yourself is crucial to reaching outcomes that work for you.

What You Will Lean

  • Identify factors that influence our inability to be assertive
  • Identify the cost of not using assertion and the benefits of assertiveness
  • Identify the difference between assertiveness and aggressive, passive or passive-aggressive behaviors
  • Describe the elements of assertive communication
  • Utilize “I” messages and descriptive language in assertiveness
  • Use an assertion model for objectionable behaviour
  • Identify and address some challenges in assertion in conflict

About Your Facilitator

Alan Simpson, BTh., MA (Conflict Management), Cert. ConRes, is a facilitator, trainer, conflict coach and mediator for individuals and groups. He provides engagement processes and training seminars for leaders and their organizations nationally and internationally. He has 30 years of experience in coaching and training adults, families and organizations in communication skills, change management and conflict engagement. He has worked with businesses, schools, government staff, non-profit boards and faith based organizations. His offerings include leadership development, board management, team building, and retreat facilitation. Alan is a skills coach and instructor for the Justice Institute of BC in the Okanagan.
