Celebrate This Labour Day!

As Labour Day approaches we are often focused on the end of summer and the beginning of the new school year. Labour Day is also an opportunity to reflect on how far we have come in the labour movement, ensuring that employees are treated with dignity and fairness in the workplace.

The labour movement has been instrumental in negotiating and fighting for many things that we sometimes take for granted like weekends, parental leave, sick leave, and ensuring access to health benefits. Professional labour relations organizations also provide a space for their members to access information and get confidential advice on workplace issues.

AAPS was formalized as a labour relations organization, by members just like you, when untenable changes were happening to your work contract. We continue to be led by our members who want to ensure that UBC remains a progressive employer. There is still a lot of work to be done in ensuring worker’s rights are upheld and that there is equity across all departments at UBC.

As we begin active negotiations with the University on Collective Bargaining and the Compensation Review Implementation, we are reminded of positive changes that can be created in the workplace when we work together.

If you are looking to participate in Labour Day celebrations, here is a list of events around BC.

Happy Labour Day!
