AAPS applauds new childcare spaces at UBC

Vancouver, B.C.: The Association of Administrative and Professional Staff at UBC (AAPS) applauds the addition of 91 new childcare spaces at UBC’s Point Grey Campus.

The Province recently announced a partnership with the University that will see more childcare spaces added to the three UBC childcare centres operating at the institution’s largest work site.

We have heard from our members regarding the challenges they face to find appropriate childcare. Not having good quality, reliable childcare can have a negative impact on members’ work life.

Having access to childcare close to work is particularly important given the cost of living in Metro Vancouver and the distance that University employees are required to commute. A number of our members have had to leave their roles at UBC as they could not find childcare that accommodated their work and transit time.

While the priority for these new spaces will be given to the children of UBC students, AAPS hopes that UBC will draw from the waitlist and ensure both staff and faculty have equal access to the remaining new childcare spaces.

This announcement is a good first step, but there is still a lot to be done around B.C. to ensure that all members have access to safe, convenient, and affordable childcare near where they live or work.
