Faculty of Arts Members are encouraged to provide feedback on Gage Averill

Consideration of the Reappointment of Dr. Gage Averill, Dean of the Faculty of Arts

January 14, 2016

To: All members of the Faculty of Arts (faculty, staff and students)

From:   Angela Redish, Provost and Vice President Academic

A President’s Advisory Committee has been established with a mandate to advise the President on extension of appointment for the Dean of the Faculty of Arts. The Advisory Committee may also advise the President on matters of future priorities for the Faculty. See Policy #23, “Extension of Appointment for Deans.” http://universitycounsel.ubc.ca/files/2013/10/policy23.pdf

In September, 2015, the Faculty underwent an external review by a team of distinguished colleagues, as the first step in the process to consider Dean Averill’s extension of appointment. To assist in informing that process, I wrote to all members of the Faculty to ask for written comments on the matters that the review team was tasked with examining. In advance of the site visit, the review team was provided with the Faculty’s self-study documentation, together with comments from the Faculty. The team participated in an intensive series of meetings on site, September 21 – 23. I received the external review report, dated October, 2015, and released the report to the Faculty. The report, and the Faculty’s response to the report may be found on the Provost’s website: http://vpacademics2.sites.olt.ubc.ca/files/2015/05/2015-Review-Report-of-UBC-Faculty-of-Arts-final.pdf or on the Faculty’s website at: http://www.arts.ubc.ca/about-arts/reports/

On behalf of the Advisory Committee, I now write to seek your feedback directly related to the Dean’s leadership over the past six years with respect to the Faculty, the University, and the communities to which the Faculty relates. In addition, the Committee is interested in hearing your suggestions on how the University can support the Dean and the Faculty to ensure that UBC’s Faculty of Arts continues to be effective, and achieves its objectives of being impactful and indispensable in its academic and research missions, prepares students for meaningful lives and enriches society. The Committee would also be interested in your thoughts on the challenges and opportunities facing the Faculty in the next few years, how they may be affected by the Dean’s extension of appointment and how the University can assist in advancing the Faculty’s vision.

We would appreciate receiving your comments as soon as possible, and no later than Friday, February 5. Comments should be forwarded to me in confidence by email c/o Pamela Moffett in the Provost’s Office: pamela.moffett@ubc.ca; or by fax, in confidence, to Pamela at 604-822-3134. All comments will be considered in strict confidence. Anonymous comments will not be considered. If requested, Pamela will remove the author’s name before the comments are shared with the Committee.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.
