Program Summary

This session will explore a range of topics on the art and science of facilitation, equipping you with tools and strategies to enhance the value of meetings, foster meaningful engagement, and drive collaborative success. Throughout this interactive session, we will touch on and explore the most relevant of the following topics:

  • Preparing yourself and why prep time is important
  • Ideas for beginning and closing well
  • Knowing your “why”
  • Understanding your role and its limits
  • Optimizing valuable engagement
  • Navigating meeting pitfalls and challenges

How You Will Learn

  • Theory
  • Reflection and analysis of self and workplace situations
  • Large and small group discussions
  • Scenario-based examples
  • In-session practice

Participant Expectations

  • This session runs from 9am-12pm, please ensure you can be present and participate for the full 3 hours
  • The session is open to AAPS members only
  • The session will be held in person at Point Grey Campus
  • Be able to be supportive and inclusive of colleagues
  • Maintain diplomacy, dignity, and confidentiality of what is shared in the room
  • Be open to trying to processes and exercises presented even if they do not mediately resonate with you

About Your Facilitator

Charles Holmes is a skilled facilitator and educator whose 25 years of experience has honed a passion for creating meaningful dialogue among groups whose diverse opinions would otherwise work against a common understanding of desired outcomes. Charles has facilitated projects with clients from health care—including dozens of Canadian health regulatory agencies—to forestry and mining, software and pharmaceutical companies, educational institutions and utility firms, government and not-for-profit sectors. The meetings he has designed and facilitated have focused on innovation, conflict resolution, community engagement, long range scenario planning and hundreds of strategic planning sessions with Boards and management teams. He has worked with multi-national corporations in many settings throughout the world.

As an educator, Charles has taught negotiation, team building, meeting facilitation and leadership in Executive Programs for universities in Canada and Saudi Arabia. He was a senior associate of the University of Cambridge, Business and the Environment Program. He was co-founder of the Learning Strategies Group in the Faculty of Business at Simon Fraser University where he was the lead in establishing the Executive Development Program, a biotech MBA and an MBA in Applied Sustainability.
