Downtown: Goodbye Pie Charts: Improve your data communications skills

PROGRAM SUMMARY
There’s a revolution in chart design and data visualization that is sweeping business and research communities alike. In this session you will learn simple tricks and techniques for enhancing the potential of your quantitative and qualitative data to inform and inspire people to action when you don’t have a lot of time.
Please note you will be asked to bring an example of a chart or graph you have been working on or have used in the past and would like to improve.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
- Explain the role of data visualization in more effective information dissemination
- List ways to enhance common default Excel charts for improved uptake and understanding
- Describe innovative alternatives to the standard column, pie, and line graphs
- Identify engaging ways to present qualitative data
- Redesign a personal chart example using basic principles learned

WHY AAPS IS OFFERING THIS SESSION
Effectively communicating data is helpful skill in the modern workplace. We hope that through this session AAPS members will become more comfortable efficiently using data in reports and presentations.
AUDIENCE
This session is designed for members who want to present both quantitative and qualitative data in their reports and presentations more effectively. ABOUT YOUR FACILITATOR
Kylie Hutchinson is an independent consultant and trainer with Community Solutions Planning & Evaluation. Her passion is transforming typical reporting practices through innovation and visualisation. She is known internationally for her interactive and engaging workshops and webinars. She is the author of three books on program planning and evaluation: Survive and Thrive: Three Steps to Securing Your Program’s Sustainability, A Short Primer on Innovative Evaluation Reporting and Evaluation Failures: 22 Tales of Mistakes Made and Lessons Learned.
