Negotiation Skills for The Workplace – Intro Session
In this hands-on interactive session, you will learn practical negotiation skills and strategies that you can use in your day-to-day work life. The art of negotiation will be broken down into 3 fundamental frameworks of Attitude, Process and Skill. This program will then provide valuable insights into these three framework dimensions, enhancing the sophistication of your negotiation strategy and the skills used to implement that strategy.
What You will Learn
- You will learn how to properly assess the negotiation landscape
- How to properly evaluate the motivation of the parties to reach an agreement
- A framework of approach giving your negotiation strategy a process structure
- You will learn the most common misuses of power in the realm of negotiation
- You will learn some practical real world communication skills to improve your negotiation outcome
How You will Learn
- Experiential, hands-on learning
- Active skills practice in pairs or small groups in breakout rooms
- Facilitated debrief to help land the learning in a large group
Audience
This session is designed as an introductory session to negotiations for members who do not have experience negotiating in the workplace. For our practice and discussion, we will focus on scenarios from an employee perspective such negotiating for pay raises, flexibility of the work schedule, to be put on a specific project. About Your Facilitator
Trevor Sones is an Adjunct Professor of Organizational Behaviour at UBC Sauder School of Business, where he teaches extensively on conflict resolution, negotiations, communication and leadership for Executive Education, Workplace Professionals, Bachelor of Commerce, Master of Management, and Professional MBA audiences.
With thousands of days of mediation & negotiation experience solving interpersonal conflicts and major multi-party disputes involving organizations of all sizes in the public and private sectors; Trevor’s unique value proposition is his ability to go beyond the research and provide participants with real-world tools and techniques that actually work in the field.
Trevor has worked with numerous Fortune 500 companies such as Samsung, Coca-Cola, and Safeway, as well as major organizations like Seaspan, SNC Lavalin, Universities, School Districts, Municipalities, and the Provincial Health Authorities of BC.
Wonderfully energetic and highly reviewed by program participants, he has taught executive programs in British Columbia, Ontario and Alberta on the topics of Conflict Resolution, Negotiation, Mediation, Persuasion & Influence, Authentic Leadership, Management Excellence, Communication & Facilitation, Labour Relations, Communicating Without Authority, and Dealing with Difficult Conversations.
Trevor has taught and advised at three top-tier research universities in Canada. His ongoing interests focus on the psychology of complex communications, leadership and negotiating collaborative change. He holds a BA Hons in Criminology & Criminal Justice with a Concentration in Law from Carleton University, and an MA in Alternative Dispute Resolution from the University of Victoria and has completed the Harvard Law School, Advanced Masters of Negotiation Executive Program.

AAPS is the labour relations organization that represents the Management and Professional Staff group to their employer UBC. AAPS is a separate organization from UBC, and your conversations with us are confidential. We offer members professional labour relations advice that is in your best interest as an employee. The AAPS Professional Development Program is designed and hosted by AAPS for our members. We offer a variety of topics on management, leadership, interpersonal skills, workplace skills, as well as personal and social development. Registration Information
The AAPS Professional Development program is designed for and offered exclusively to AAPS members at no cost. AAPS members can register to attend one of the in-person sessions, the live Zoom session, or access the recorded version. Before registering, please consider your schedule and your ability to actively participate in the full length of the session.
This is the same session repeated. Please only register once. Multiple registrations throw off our numbers and makes it so other members can’t attend. Please be considerate of your fellow members. You can attend the in-person session at any location you wish.
The live Zoom session requires you to use audio, and video is strongly encouraged as well. For the in-person and live Zoom your presence and focus are important for the structure of this session. You will need to be able to attend the full length of the session. If that doesn’t work for your schedule this time around, no worries, there is always the recorded version.
