Decolonization Tour - August 20

The AAPS Summer Networking Series is a nice opportunity to connect with members from different departments and units in person on a small group tour and visit interesting places and spaces on campus. It is an opportunity for low-key networking, education, and a little exercise. It is also free and designed exclusively for AAPS members.

Outdoor art walking tour and a conversation with Naomi Sawada, Belkin Gallery Public Programs Manager
Tuesday, August 20, 2024: 10:15am -12:00pm

The Decolonization Tour highlights site-specific artworks by Indigenous artists and raises questions around issues of place, space, and identity. Considering how these works address urgent social and political concerns, we will discuss ideas of settler colonialism, decolonization, reconciliation, protocol, and the history of UBC’s Vancouver campus, which is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people.

The tour includes work by:

• Brent Sparrow Jr. (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm), sʔi:ɬqəy̓ qeqən (2016)
• Ellen Neel (Kwakwaka’wakw), Victory Through Honour (1948/2004)
• Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap of Birds (Cheyenne, Arapaho), Native Hosts (1991/2007)
• James Hart, 7idansuu (Edenshaw) (Haida), Reconciliation Pole: Honouring a Time Before, During and After Canada’s Indian Residential Schools (2015-17)
• Kayám̓ Richard Campbell (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm) and James Hart 7idansuu (Edenshaw), θəʔit (2023)

Kindly note that this is a 90-minute walking tour that covers 1.5 to 2 km and has about 40 stairs in total. If you have mobility challenges and would like to participate, kindly email me well in advance as we may be able to make adaptations. Appropriate outdoor attire is needed. Kindly note that the content of the decolonization discussion can sometimes be triggering for Indigenous members. If you are Indigenous you are invited to let me know in advance so that we can work to ensure a safer space.

Please think about your work and vacation schedule before registering. You are expected to take part in the full networking and tour experience. Late arrivals and early leavers, will not work for this series. While emergencies and illnesses happen, last minute cancellations and no-shows can be problematic. Please be considerate of your fellow AAPS members and our tour hosts.
