PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

For many people, transgender issues within an educational context are new territory. Kai brings an open and friendly approach to provide a session that aims to be highly interactive and engaging. Participants will be introduced to concepts of gender diversity as well as the unique challenges and barriers faced by transgender people. The session will also provide opportunities to apply language and principles to common scenarios involving trans people as a way to practice respectful and supportive interactions and navigate challenging and complex issues.

What You Will Learn:

  • Increased knowledge of and familiarity with gender identity concepts and terms
  • Greater understanding of the challenges and barriers transgender people face when accessing gendered spaces, programs, and systems
  • Increased comfort and proficiency in navigating complex issues and respectful interactions involving transgender people

WHY AAPS IS OFFERING THIS SESSION

Many AAPS members have questions and even sometimes anxiety around the best way to support and include transgender colleagues. Our aim is to provide a safe environment for members to gain a broader understanding of gender identity and the ability to ask questions of a facilitator at the forefront of transforming policy and processes.

If you have experienced discrimination because of your gender identity, you have questions about addressing gender identity with your employer or have questions about leaves and accommodations, please contact the AAPS Office.

AUDIENCE

This session is designed for AAPS members who are interested in learning more about gender identity and how to create an inclusive work environment. Please note that this is an encore presentation and we will be offering Part 2 in March.

It is helpful to remember that AAPS is your professional association representing you as an employee. The nature of this session is to provide you will general information and best practices that may assist you in your work environment and work with colleagues.

ABOUT YOUR FACILITATOR

Kai Scott is a trans man and social scientist with over 10 years of experience, educated in the field of International Development. Kai supports organizations in exploring and reimagining challenges related to gender. He does so through exploratory, evidence-based approaches using a range of quantitative and qualitative tools, including user-generated information, stakeholder engagements, and/or spatial analyses. He meets organizations where they are at and engages in transparent decision-making processes that allow maximum buy-in from diverse stakeholders at various levels of the organization. He helps de-mystify the topic of gender diversity in a reassuring manner, inspiring confidence, new vistas, and excitement.
